Across the pond

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

So I’m getting ready to go to England to teach at Neill Gorton’s Millennium FX, and I am looking forward to my fourth trip abroad. Neill’s a swell guy, and I remember him being very excited to start on a Davros sculpture for the new Doctor Who show that he does the creature work for. Can’t wait to see what he came up with! He also updated the Cybermen robots, and they are amazing. I believe he even sells replicas through his site!

How cool are these?
Anyway, I thought I would post these amazing pics I took of Stonehenge while I was there last year. This ancient megalithic site is truly humbling. And creepy.

Then there are these ORIGINAL, SCREEN USED ape feet from 2001: A Space Odyssey. I just about passed out when I saw these. My buddy Cliff of Creature Effects in Uxbridge had these on loan from the legendary makeup artist Stuart Freeborn (Yoda, Chewbacca, lots of other ass-kicking iconography), and they were on display at the London Makeup Artist Trade Show. Amazing.

Well, time to go ‘across the pond’ again….Talk to you all again soon.

This is a new feature here. Every few days, we will give you a new boogedy, so check back from time to time. This guy’s name is Rolly-Polly. This was designed for a movie (I don’t even remember which one). I thought it would be fun to make a creature shaped like a ball. I think the furry arms are a fun touch and lend him some whimsy.

Can a loser get any luckier?

Painting by Michael Whelan

I met one of the finest artists in the world at the recent Illuxcon Fantasy Expo, painter Michael Whelan. He is, by far, my very favorite horror artist, and I am very fortunate to know him. Many years ago, I sent him a sculpture of a vampire I had done (1993, I think!). He was generous enough to send me a gorgeous print of a Sepultura album cover he had done, as well as a t-shirt with the same image on it. What a guy. While at the Expo, I gave him a sculpture I had done as a demonstration, and a few weeks later, he sends me an amazing painting of the same sculpture, but done in the style that only Michael Whelan can do—colorful, vivid, perfectly composed and beautifully rendered. I am honored and awestruck that he used a piece of mine as a subject, and I consider it a true sign that I have ‘made it’. An original Michael Whelan!!!!
Now I suppose I have to up the ante, and send him something that will make him pass out. Here’s hoping I’m up to the task.
